Fanaa is a 2003 Indian Hindi-language romantic drama film written and directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali with music by A. R. Rahman with Hrithik Roshan as the lead actor, supported by Amrita Rao, Ayesha Takia, Farida Jalal and Tabu in pivotal supporting roles. The film tells the story of a couple who are deeply in love but cannot marry due to their religion. The story is a triangular love story in which a Hindu man and a Muslim woman from India, fall in love when the couple comes from England from their studies. Thus they have to face the wrath of their parents when they get to know about the relationship. In the end, the couple sacrifices their love for their religion and culture.The movie is loosely based on William Shakespeare's tragic play "Romeo and Juliet", Shatranj Ke Khilari (1977). Filming for Fanaa began in January 2003 and ended in November 2003. The film was released on 13 December 2003 with positive reviews, critics rewarding Bhansali's direction, A. R. Rahman's music and Hrithik Roshan and Amrita Rao's on-screen chemistry. It was a commercial success, grossing Rs. 168 million in India and US$3.5 million overseas, becoming the fifth highest-grossing film of 2003 in India. The movie was nominated for three Filmfare Awards including Best Movie Award, Best Actor Award for Hrithik Roshan and Best Female Playback Singer Award to Alka Yagnik for the song "Tere Mast Mast Do Nain". Ayesha Takia's portrayal of a Muslim woman was critically acclaimed and she won the National Film Award – Special Jury Award.Three couples – an Indian couple, a Pakistani couple and a British couple – meet at a boarding school in London, England. The British man (Hrithik Roshan) and the Pakistani woman (Amrita Rao) meet and fall in love. They leave for India to enter their masters' programme so they can be legally married. The Indian girl (Farida Jalal) is forced by her mother to marry the son of a wealthy industrialist as her marriage will secure his business contacts. She leaves for India where she meets the Indian boy (Neil Nitin Mukesh) who is also Dev's friend. The two men are in love with the English girl and the Pakistani girl, respectively. They both try to impress them to win their hearts, but they don't succeed. The English girl finds out that the Pakistani girl has feelings for Hrithik. She also finds out about Hrithik's feelings for her and tells him that she will not leave her Pakistani friend for his sake, but urges him to make up his mind.He finds out about her feelings for him through a small clue left by her at home one day when they saw each other at her place by chance after a long time.
